Acupuncture and Immunity
It is often claimed that acupuncture boosts immunity. Research by Tokyo university has looked at the specific impact of acupuncture post exercise. Post vigorous exercise the bodies immune system is lowered, enabling access for opportunistic infections. The study looked at elite and non-elite athletes. Salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) concentrations and cortisol levels were measured post acupuncture as indicators of immune system function. In all cases both indicators of the immune system showed that acupuncture boosts the immune system. There have been many studies to back this claim up, in both human and animals, thereby nullifying the argumnent that acupuncture works solely by placebo effect.
